Finding the Enduring Shield of Princeton

The Princeton University shield has a widespread presence throughout the campus. With a keen eye, one can catch a glimpse of this icon in campus architecture — from interiors to facades — and it also adorns sport venues, commercial items, publications and more. Whether small or large, sculptural, carved, or printed in ink, the University shield serves as an emblem of Princeton’s rich traditions.

Video feature: Devising theater with youth

The Princeton University Program in Theater, in partnership with Community House and the Community-Based Learning Initiative, is offering the course “Devising Theater With Youth” this semester. The service-learning course promotes experiential learning for both Princeton University students and a small group of children from Community House, an on-campus after-school program.

Tam, Stouffer named Sachs Scholars

Stephanie Tam and Kaitlin Stouffer, two seniors with track records of achievement in academics and research, have been named recipients of the Daniel M. Sachs Class of 1960 Graduating Scholarship, one of the highest awards given to Princeton undergraduates.

University celebrates Princeton inventions

At the Celebrate Princeton Invention reception Nov. 29, the University honored its faculty, staff and student inventors for their role in technology transfer — which includes patenting and licensing of inventions — to bring research innovations to the marketplace.

Call for nominations for the 2013 President’s Award for Distinguished Teaching

The Office of the Dean of the Faculty asks all members of the community to submit letters of nomination for the 2013 President’s Award for Distinguished Teaching.  All current full, associate, and assistant professors, senior lecturers, and lecturers who have served at least half time for three or more years are eligible for nomination.

Nebel named Marshall Scholarship

Princeton University senior Jake Nebel is among the 34 American college students who have been named 2013 Marshall Scholars. The Marshall Scholarship covers the cost of graduate study and living at a British university for two to three years. Nebel, a philosophy major from Winter Park, Fla., plans to pursue a master’s degree in philosophy at the University of Oxford.

Paid leave for employees aiding hurricane relief efforts

Princeton University has established a humanitarian relief program that will allow University employees to assist ongoing relief efforts following Hurricane Sandy, which devastated parts of the Northeast in October. The program, effective Nov. 19 through June 30, 2013, may grant regular and term employees a paid leave of up to five days while they participate in recognized relief efforts.

Traditional bonfire sparks Princeton spirit

Princeton students, faculty, staff and alumni celebrated the University’s achievement in football this fall with a traditional bonfire on Cannon Green on Saturday, Nov. 17. The bonfire, a campus custom dating to the late 1800s, is now observed when Princeton sweeps Harvard and Yale in football.

Field hockey team wins NCAA title

For the first time in program history, the Princeton field hockey team won the NCAA Division I National Championship in a comeback 3-2 victory over No. 1-ranked North Carolina on Sunday in Norfolk, Va. In a battle between the top two teams in the nation, it took another resilient Princeton effort to best the six-time national champion Tar Heels.

Cunningham awarded Mitchell Scholarship

Senior Flannery Cunningham has been named a George J. Mitchell Scholar to spend a year studying music composition at University College Cork in Ireland. The Mitchell Scholarships were awarded to 12 students nationwide by the Washington D.C.-based U.S.-Ireland Alliance.

Daniels, Fraga to receive top alumni awards

Princeton University will present its top honors for alumni to Mitchell E. Daniels Jr., governor of Indiana and president-elect of Purdue University, and Arminio Fraga, a financier and former president of the central bank of Brazil who also focuses on addressing social issues. They will be presented with the awards on Saturday, Feb. 23.
